MICHAEL V. MUNDSCHAU, Senior Principal Scientist

Michael V. Mundschau studied chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His Ph.D work at the Laboratory for Surface Studies was in catalysis and surface science. Studies continued on the fundamentals of thin-film growth as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the Institute of Physics in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Germany. He continued studies at the Fritz-Haber-Institute in Berlin on catalytic reactions and reaction-diffusion fronts before returning to the United States for a teaching position at Bowling Green State University. He also spent time at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, studying thin-film growth. He has been working at Eltron Research Inc. to develop catalysts for oxygen and hydrogen transport membranes. Dr. Mundschau is the author of over 65 scientific papers, and has presented his work as invited speaker at over 60 conferences and seminars around the world.

Dr. Mundschau’s responsibilities at Eltron Research Inc. include development of hydrogen transport membranes, optimization of catalysts for oxygen ion transport ceramic membranes used in the production of synthesis gas from methane, jet fuel and diesel fuel. Dr. Mundschau has also developed ceramic coating materials for NASA which are designed to survive the demanding conditions of the space environment.
